Phone Interview Tips to Get You to the Next Round

Today, I am going to talk about telephonic interviews and offer some tips to help you crack them. This article would have been different if we were not going through the pandemic as a telephonic interview would have meant a precursor to an in-person interview. Hence, the questions would be basic to assess certain traits and set a time for the interview. However, since the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns forced businesses to stop operating from offices and working from home became the new normal, phone interviews became more important. In this article, you will find some important tips to help you crack a phone interview.

The first call that you receive is usually from an executive to discuss the job opportunity. This will typically be followed by a telephonic interview either with your future manager and/or a senior HR professional. Depending on your role, there might be one/two additional interviews and/or a video interview too. Since we are talking about phone interviews, here are some things that you need to keep in mind to ace them.

Answer the phone yourself

This is very important. You will be informed about the date and time when the phone interview will take place with the employer. Please ensure that when it is time for the telephonic interview, you answer the call. Do not let any family member or friend answer your phone.

Be a good listener

While on a phone call, there is no eye contact. Hence it is absolutely necessary to listen attentively to the speaker. Understand what the employer is trying to convey. If you have any questions, jot it down in a notepad or diary. Once the employer is done talking, you can ask your questions. It is important not to interrupt the speaker.

Turn off the call waiting option

At the time of the telephonic interview, you would not want to be interrupted by unnecessary phone calls. This could break your chain of thoughts and you could sound distracted. Hence it is advisable to disable the call waiting option on your phone.

Hands-free / Bluetooth

Make sure the voice clarity is good and is audible to the employer. If you are using a Bluetooth, ensure that it is completely charged.

Block out unnecessary sounds

The room where you will be speaking on the phone, make sure that there is no TV /radio volume in the background. Also, if you are living with family members, inform them that you will be on an official call so that they can try to avoid making any unnecessary loud sounds.

Some other general tips to keep in mind

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Do not chew gum or smoke while on the phone.
  • If possible, stand while you speak. It exuberates a sense of confidence, energy, and enthusiasm.
  • Enunciate well. It is important the employer is able to understand clearly what you are trying to speak. Take your time to process your thoughts. Speak slowly and do not rush to finish the call. Be concise. Come to the point quickly while responding to the questions.
  • You must sound professional. Avoid using slang like yup, yeah, etc.
  • Smile as you speak. This has an impact on the tone of your voice.
  • Keep your resume handy. So, if any questions are asked, you have it all ready.

Summing Up

It is important to remember that a phone interview can seem difficult since there is a handicap of not being able to see the person or use expressions to convey your point. However, your interviewer has the same handicaps too. Hence, ensure that you convey your point in a crisp and professional manner while keeping the tips mentioned above in mind.
